Reviving the Ancient Greek-Sicilian Settlement of Gioiosa Guardia
The Hellas Gioiosa project, developed by the SicilyLab team, has breathed new life into the ancient Greek-Sicilian settlement of Gioiosa Guardia, a site of significant historical importance located on the slopes of Monte Meliuso. This event not only revitalized the ancient city but also engaged local communities and visitors, shedding light on a vital chapter of Sicily’s Greek history.
The installation featured a virtual reconstruction of the ancient city, allowing the public to explore it in 3D through immersive headsets, offering a unique experience of discovery and learning. Additionally, the team created a land art piece with the construction of a circular temple, The Temple of Hestia. This temple, composed of interlockin panels, was designed to be lightweight and transportable to the mountain’s summit, creating a visual and symbolic connection between the ancient settlement and the overlying fortress.
The event, held on August 31, 2024, saw the participation of several distinguished figures, including Maestro Antonio Presti of the Fiumara d’Arte Foundation, Anna Ricciardi, Artistic Director of the Tindari Archaeological Park, Archaeologist Michele Fasolo, Dr. Teodoro La Monica, Cultural Heritage Assessor of the Municipality of Gioiosa Marea, and Dr. Domenico Targia, Director of the Tindari Archaeological Park. The day concluded with a sunset recital, merging art, history, and community in a deeply evocative experience.
Thanks to the joint efforts of the Municipality of Gioiosa Marea and the Tindari Archaeological Park, Hellas Gioiosa has significantly contributed to raising awareness of this historic site, transforming it into a cultural and tourist attraction of great value.
