INTRODUCTION TO THE COMPETITION

The THE SEVILLA SUSTAINABLE HUB competition emerges as a celebration of architectural innovation centered around sustainability. Located on Isla de la Cartuja, along the banks of the Guadalquivir River in Seville, the site is uniquely positioned near theaters, theme parks, and the historic area of Expo ’92. This special location required a design vision that could harmonize with the surroundings while focusing on minimizing energy and environmental impact, in line with principles of bioarchitecture and sustainability. The competition’s requirements were clear: to seamlessly integrate three main functions—a creative hub for young artists, a high-quality public space with strong urban connections, and a modern electric vehicle charging hub. The submissions were expected to balance these needs, emphasizing passive design strategies and the use of low-energy-impact materials

OUR WINNING PROJECT

Our project, R.A.S. – Riverside Art Studios, stood out as the ideal response to these complex challenges. By innovating with a basic module of 6x6x6 meters and selecting only seven types of modules to close the sides—walls, windows, and doors—we structured the space organically, creating fluid and inviting internal pathways that design a dynamic and welcoming environment. The terraces and open spaces enhance livability, while shading solutions inspired by Seville’s traditional shutters and curtains, complemented by the study of perimeter plants, significantly contribute to controlling the summer microclimate.

Great attention was paid to accessibility and the diversity of experiences offered, with modular construction and the use of eco-friendly materials that seamlessly blend with the transformation of roofs into true energy generators. The proximity to the Guadalquivir River is not just a landscape feature but becomes the cornerstone of the project, connecting RAS to the cultural and natural essence of Seville. This approach allowed us to conceive a work that not only respects its environment but enhances it, positioning itself as a new landmark for both residents and visitors.

Final Thoughts:

Throughout this project, my friend Martina Di Marco and I collaborated from a distance—me in Rome and her in Ferrara, where she studies Architecture. Despite intense periods, juggling exams, master’s theses, and work commitments, we never allowed ourselves to be discouraged, carrying this project forward alongside many others. For this reason, I feel deeply satisfied and grateful for the results we achieved.

The journey was not without its challenges; in fact, after the presentation, there were moments of doubt. However, we always maintained a positive and proactive attitude toward improvement. It was a source of great pride for me to learn that our hard work was universally recognized and appreciated by such a highly skilled panel of professionals. This recognition is a strong encouragement for us to continue striving, to improve, and to always give our best.
