THE ROLE OF CRITERIA IN PARAMETRIC ARCHITECTURE
The objective of the course “Numerical Techniques for Calculation and Design in Architecture. Parametric Design” is to explore the potential of parametric digital architecture. However, before engaging in parametric design, it’s essential to understand the architectural needs that will drive the project. Defining these criteria is crucial, as they guide the entire design process and determine the effectiveness of the final outcome.
We began by analyzing an existing building, extracting its key characteristics to form a foundation for our parametric exploration. This analysis led us to identify the fundamental parameters that reflect the building’s functional, structural, and aesthetic goals. From these parameters, we created a more efficient node structure, optimizing the design through parametric techniques.
Throughout the process, we carefully justified our design decisions, explaining how the transformation and optimization of the structure resulted in improved functionality and performance. By prioritizing the architectural needs first, parametric design becomes a tool for enhancing the project, rather than simply a method for generating complex forms.
